Chalazion: What That Eyelid Bump Really Means

What Is a Chalazion?

A chalazion is a slow-developing, painless lump or bump that appears on the upper or lower eyelid. It forms when an oil gland (called a meibomian gland) becomes blocked and inflamed, often after a stye has healed. Unlike a stye, a chalazion is typically not infected and does not cause sharp pain. Instead, it tends to grow gradually and may feel firm to the touch.

While usually harmless, large chalazia can press against the eyeball, cause discomfort, or even temporarily blur vision. They can also become cosmetically concerning if they persist or grow large enough to be visible from a distance.

Symptoms of Chalazion?

  • Painless lump or swelling on the eyelid
  • Mild tenderness or sensitivity
  • Increased tearing or eye irritation
  • Blurry vision if the lump grows large
Usually not painful, unlike a stye

What Causes a Chalazion?

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, chalazia form when the oil glands (meibomian glands) within the eyelids become blocked, causing oil to back up and inflame the tissue. This blockage leads to a firm, painless lump, rather than an infection, and is typically different from a stye. People with a history of blepharitis, rosacea, or seborrheic dermatitis have a higher risk of developing chalazia. Additionally, factors like poor eyelid hygiene, rubbing your eyes frequently, and failure to remove makeup properly can contribute to recurrent gland blockages.

How Is a Chalazion Treated?

Most chalazia resolve with simple at-home care:

  • Warm compresses for 10–15 minutes, several times a day

  • Gentle eyelid massage to encourage drainage

  • Avoid squeezing the bump, which can worsen inflammation

  • Stop wearing eye makeup or contact lenses until it clears

If it doesn’t improve, your optometrist may refer you for:

  • Antibiotic ointments or steroid injections, if prescribed

  • Minor surgery in stubborn or long-lasting cases

Still Dealing With a Lumpy Eyelid?

A chalazion isn’t usually dangerous—but it can definitely be annoying. If your eyelid bump isn’t going away, getting larger, or keeps coming back, it’s time to get it checked. Relief might just be a warm compress (or professional help) away.
