What Is an Ophthalmological Consultation?
An ophthalmological consultation is an advanced eye health assessment provided by a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing and managing complex eye conditions. While our optometrists handle routine exams and prescriptions, our in-house ophthalmologists’ step in when deeper medical insight or treatment planning is required.
Available Across Trinidad
At Value Optical, we offer in-house ophthalmological consultations at multiple branches throughout Trinidad. Whether you’re visiting our Port of Spain, San Juan, Chaguanas, or any other branch, you can be assured that a licensed ophthalmologist is available to assess your case if necessary.
When Might You Be Referred to an Ophthalmologist?
You won’t need to guess — your optometrist will guide you. During a comprehensive eye exam, if any signs of more complex issues are found, you’ll be referred to one of our ophthalmologists for a deeper evaluation. Common reasons include:
- Diabetic-related eye complications
- Cataracts that affect daily vision
- Unexplained vision changes
- Possible surgical needs
- Ongoing discomfort or pain in the eye
- Monitoring of eye diseases like glaucoma
What Happens During the Consultation?
Your ophthalmologist will review your symptoms, examine the inside and outside of your eyes, and use advanced diagnostic tools to determine the root cause of any issues. If you’ve been experiencing blurred vision, flashes, floaters, or rapid changes, this level of care is essential.
Depending on your condition, they may prescribe medication, develop a treatment plan, or recommend further testing.
Special Testing at Our San Fernando Branch
While all branches have in-house ophthalmologists, our San Fernando branch is equipped with advanced diagnostic tools for more specialized testing. If your ophthalmologist recommends additional testing not available at your current branch, you may be referred to San Fernando for that portion of care. This ensures that you receive the most accurate diagnosis and appropriate next steps without unnecessary delays.
Why This Matters — Especially in Trinidad
Eye conditions related to diabetes and aging — like diabetic retinopathy and cataracts — are common in Trinidad and Tobago. That’s why we believe it’s important to offer accessible, expert-level consultations in-house. Early detection and the right follow-up can protect your vision for years to come.
Start with a Comprehensive Eye Exam
You don’t need to request an ophthalmological consultation directly. Simply book a comprehensive eye exam at your nearest Value Optical branch. If our optometrists detect something that needs further attention, they’ll refer you to the in-house ophthalmologist.
It’s a seamless, guided process — all under one roof.
